SCORE
Chapter 03 of 05

Scoring &
What Passing
Means.

The INBDE is a pass/fail exam. If you pass, you receive the word "PASS" — and nothing else. No number. No percentile. No comparison to other candidates. Your score is private.

Behind the scenes, your performance is converted to a scaled score between 49 and 99. You need a 75 to pass. But this number is never shared with passing candidates — which means nobody can compare scores at dinner.

The Secret of Scaled Scores: A score of 74 does NOT mean you answered 74% correctly — and it does NOT mean you were one question away from passing. The scaled score is a statistical transformation designed to account for question difficulty across different exam versions.

PASS OR FAIL. THAT'S IT.

If you fail, you'll receive a score report showing your performance across content areas. This gives you actionable data on where to focus for your retake. The fail score report is one of the most valuable study tools available — use it.

Retake Rules

You must wait a minimum of 60 days between attempts. You can take the INBDE up to 4 times per year. You have a 5-year window from your first attempt to pass the exam before eligibility restrictions apply.
